The Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services (KDADS) had various long-term care facility classifications, including Skilled Nursing Facilities, Assisted Living Facilities, and Home Plus Homes.
A Home Plus Home is a private licence residence or facility capable of caring for twelve or less residents.
In Kansas, there are some 150 Home Plus Homes, with most being located in single-family, residential neighborhoods. Many of these homes specialize in caring for residents with cognitive impairment caused by Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, other dementias or strokes. Known as Memory Care Homes, these homes are the wave of the future and most have been constructed in the past 20 years.
Neighborhood houses appeal to those with Alzheimer’s and others with memory loss because they remind them of home, have fewer caregivers to get to know, and the smaller environment becomes familiar and is easy to adjust to. Residents bring their favorite furnishings, receive personalized care, are allowed to be on their own flexible schedules, and are treated like family. The professionalism in these homes arises out of the licensed nurse oversight and the homes must meet KDADS regulations and undergo audits (surveys) every 12-18 months.
A calm environment, caregivers trained in how to care for those with memory loss, familiar surroundings, music therapy, pets, and freedom to be an individual mark the lifestyle in many of these homes. Behaviors are lessened, medications are reduced, and health often improves.
At ComfortCare Homes, we believe our small homes are superior models of care for those with memory issues. We provide services including in-home visits from physicians, medication administration, therapies, podiatry, dental hygienist visits, hospice and palliative care, hair styling and so much more.
In addition to health care, we provide all aspects of food preparation, housekeeping and laundry services, engage our residents in meaningful activity, exercise and appropriate cognitive stimulation, bathing, dressing and grooming assistance, a full incontinence program, and all at one flat fee with no additional charges for various levels of care.
