As caregivers one of our challenges is dealing with the changes in behaviors of our loved ones with dementia or Alzheimer’s. Unfortunately, medications and environmental conditions can often make the behaviors even worse. At Morningstar we strive to provide a true home environment along with providing an activity program that provides both physical and mental exercises. These elements not only enhance quality of life, but also decreases behaviors like wandering and agitation.
Gathering in a group creates a social/family environment. You will frequently find our resident’s sitting together and holding hands. One afternoon a wife to one of our residents came to visit and found her husband sitting next to another woman holding hands. The wife’s response was “I’m not jealous a bit, if he’s happy that’s all the matters.”
Her response reminded me of this great quote, “Whatever the present moment contains, accept it as if you had chosen it. Always work with it, not against it.” -Eckhart Tolle
By focusing on creating a family environment we make the transition easier on our residents and our resident’s families. After all we think of a move to Morningstar as a change of address, not a change in lifestyle.
